From the desk of Pastor Karen

Dear Friends,
I hope your 2007 is off to a great start.

Thank you for your faithfulness in giving. Due to strong year end giving we were able to pay all of our bills and fully pay our apportionments of $93,827.76.

Things are looking good for the 2007 budget. We are not a church that has lots of people with “deep pockets”, but, we are a church that is able to do amazing things for God when we all work together and give generously to the very best of our ability. Thank you for all you do!

We continue our worship series from the book of Luke, learning the stories and teachings of Jesus.

From the Shared Ministry Team

The Shared Ministry Committee of RUMC is a group that recruits and recognizes those volunteers who share their time and talents to make our church go. When new members join, they fill out a questionnaire listing their interests and skills, which is entered into a database maintained in the church office. Shared Ministry keeps in contact with each committee and service area, and when the need arises, persons with interest in specific areas are called, and asked if they would be interested in serving on a particular group. Job descriptions for each group can answer some questions, and prospective members are often invited to attend a meeting before making a decision. Dedication and recognition of volunteers is an ongoing process, with the members of Shared Ministry writing thank you notes and attending meetings to express our appreciation.

The following is a list of those who have said yes to serving RUMC as committee and group leaders in 2007. We praise God, and thank them for their gifts to RUMC.

A training session for new hospitality volunteers, and open to all members of the church, will be held on February 17th. This session will deal with welcoming guests, and how we might become even more inviting as a church.

Hospitality Training – On Saturday, February 17, from 9 – 10:30 AM, there will be a training seminar for all ushers, greeters, welcome desk volunteers and staff. We will use some wonderful material from Igniting Ministries, to learn more about becoming an even more welcoming congregation. This will be for new volunteers (see below) and returning veterans. Muffins, juice and coffee will be served.

Volunteers – We are looking for people interested in lending a hand with ushering, greeting, and other jobs during worship. We are also looking for helpers for a new group getting started that will help with “handyman” projects around the church. If you have always wanted to be an usher or a greeter, but weren’t sure how to go about it, now is your chance. We will also be offering training for new volunteers (see above).

"FAT TUESDAY”
ALL CHURCH PIG-OUT!

Fat Tuesday (or Shrove Tuesday) is a merry carnival first recorded in Prussia in the 15th century. It is celebrated each year on Tuesday, the eve of Ash Wednesday, to mark the winter's end and the beginning of the Lent. Pancakes are synonymous with Fat Tuesday, as people glut themselves on the last of the rich foods before the long Lenten fasting period.

Come and celebrate Fat Tuesday with your church family! Drop by the Fellowship Hall anytime from 5:30pm-7:00pm on Tuesday, February 20th and enjoy a pancake dinner, live music (starting at 6:00pm) and carnival games for one and all.

Tickets are $5 per person or $15 per family. Proceeds will be donated to our sister church in New Orleans, Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church and to cover the expenses for dinner, games and prizes.

GETTING TO KNOW JESUS-Groups are forming in January that will look more closely at this man that the early Church described as both fully HUMAN and fully DIVINE. “Jesus, the Early Years” is part of the “Understanding the Savior Series”. It focuses on the first 8 chapters of the Gospel of Mark and will last for 13 weeks (January – March). There are three opportunities to participate: Sundays, 9:00-10:00 a.m., Sundays, 10:30-11:30 and Wednesdays, 7:00-8:00 p.m. No homework or preparation time is needed—only regular attendance at the one hour sessions. Discovery Avenue Children's Ministry News

Discovery Avenue Children’s Ministries will find lots of “lovely” things to do in February!

The month of “love” kicks off by showing your family how much you love and enjoy one another when you attend the Family Fellowship Valentine party on Friday, February 9. Watch for sign up and details at the Children’s Welcome Table.

Our month of hearts continues with the all-church Fat Tuesday celebration on Tuesday, February 20, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Kids will enjoy Mardi Gras beads, mask making, coin hunts, face-painting, hair-wrapping, Mardi Gras duck pond, and a parade ending with a piñata. A pancake dinner will be served for a nominal fee.

In keeping with the 2007 goals of Children’s Council, we will offer a way for kids to understand God’s heart through a special Ash Wednesday service on February 21 at 7:00 pm. Kids will come away with an appreciation of what Ash Wednesday means to the Christian community and how they can experience the 40 days of Lent. More info to come in church school.

Children’s Missions would like to invite the Discovery Avenue kids to help our Rosemount Resource Center. Warm the hearts of area families and kids by donating hats, scarves, mittens and gloves. Donations can be placed in the Children’s Missions box across from the windows of E142.

Zone 56 News

For Ash Wednesday, February 21, Zone 56 kids will NOT have Zone 56 but will be free to attend the Ash Wednesday service with their families.

Mission News

The Clothing Ministry at North UMC provides free clothing to homeless or low income people in their neighborhood.  Right now, they are very low on clothing.  They are especially in need of children's clothing and adult extended sizes.  If you have any new or gently used clothing you could donate, please drop it in the bin marked Clothing Closet.

UMW News

God is full of surprises. Rosemount United Methodist Women had a successful 2006 and were able to give additional moneys to Rayne Memorial UMC, to the prison ministry, and to Rust College. Thank you for your gracious support of the UMW through helping with the Salad Luncheon, the Bazaar, food and serving receptions following memorial services and funerals, donating fabric for quilts or purchasing quilts. Many individuals and families were helped, and lives were changed through the mission outreach of UMW. Have you looked at the Response Magazines on the kiosk yet or took the CD/DVD home to watch and learn more?

Answered Prayer
Emily Medin reported this story from her daughter, Leone, who serves on the Rust College Board of Trustees. The man in charge of scholarships had been trying to find funds for a young person who had great potential. He was very frustrated as he went home thinking the only avenue left was prayer. That evening the prayers just poured out of his soul. The next morning on his desk was the check from Rosemount UMW for the exact amount needed. If ever he doubted that God answers prayer, that check certainly confirmed his belief.

Funeral Reception Servers Needed

Come, join a caring group of individuals who serve members of our congregation and their families in a time of loss. This service is of short duration, infrequent intervals and takes various forms. Funerals generally take place during the week and at midday so those with children in school would be welcomed. We need three people who can call for food for the reception from lists of willing people. We need people to prepare a pan of bars or simple salad for the reception. We also need people to give two to four hours of time the day of the funeral to prepare and serve the reception. Men are welcome to serve and are especially needed to run the dishwasher. We understand that you cannot help every time, but please consider this form of service as one that you can do. Carol Olson, 952-432-7191.

Happy Birthday

Birthday Greetings:
On Thursday, February 15, Judy Werner will celebrate a special birthday.
Please send her cards at:
