Message: “Dying to Love You”
It seems we just packed away the Christmas ornaments and now Lent is beginning. Epiphany was January 6th and one short month later Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 6th. I think it is helpful to have Lent come so close to Epiphany. It brings to mind the constant circle of celebration, repentance, and rebirth.
Lent is a forty day period of repentance, prayer, fasting, acts of mercy and self-denial. There are six Sundays in Lent but those are not counted in the forty days because every Sunday is a “mini-Easter”, a day to remember and celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death.
As we journey through Lent the message series will look at what it is that you and I need to die to, in order that Christ might live in us.

Are you a Caregiver? Might you be one in the near future?
More than ever, families face the practical and emotional challenges of caring for aging parents or a spouse. Whether sudden or gradual, assuming these roles and responsibilities can be unfamiliar and often overwhelming, particularly for working adults. Plan ahead now to address care for an aging senior. Start the dialog early to discuss expectations and priorities. Learn to assess the elder’s strengths and needs, defuse big issues, work cooperatively with family members, and access a variety of services and resources. For more, check out this web page: http://www.caregivermn.org/CarePages.asp?SID=2&ID=53
Rosemount UMC's Caring Ministries is sponsoring a seminar, Family Caregiving Strategies, where a Licensed Social Worker and Service Coordinator from DARTS will offer proven approaches to help you stay in the ‘sane lane’ while caring effectively and lovingly for senior(s) in your family. Continental breakfast will be served in the Fellowship Hall; there is no charge, only free will donation. Please register by Feb. 11, 2008 - Invite your siblings or friends to register; this is open to the community!

The shelter, located in Simpson United Methodist Church, serves the 70 homeless people who stay there each night. The next date for serving meals is February 11. This is a great family activity. We try to provide a meal once a month. Cooks are needed to prepare the meals in the Rosemount UMC kitchen. Watch for the dates and sign up to volunteer in Fellowship Hall. Contact Rich Wirt -rwirt@rosemountumc.org
The Rosemount Family Resource Center is located on 145th Street and welcomes volunteers most days and times. There is a wide range of opportunities, from organizing food donations to helping kids with homework or getting a game of basketball going. United Methodist Women
Amy in the Rosemount Town Pages listed it as one of the top stories for the year. Her article is posted in the office and on the UMW bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. The past experience and good records of years have served us well. Part of UMW is about leadership training. Who would like to work on this event?
As usual we had a few requests asking who made some of the delicious baked treats. The total income $8,337.00 is more than the past two years and slightly less than 2004. We served 234 bowls soup on Saturday, 191 slices of pie and sold 21 quilts. The Simpson United Methodist Women had a successful sale of the international handicrafts and food.
Thanks to Bonnie Student and Laurie Fosburgh who volunteered to invite and supervise crafters and independent vendors to participate for the first time in 2007. Bonnie reports, “We had 18 different tables and almost everyone of them said yes or definitely they would come back. Many said it was well organized and they liked the area.”
Thanks to the Tuesday evening group who compiled and contributed the gift baskets. The Children’s store was successful and greatly enjoyed by the children and the adult and youth helpers. Remember to look for bargains all year to donate. Thanks to Cindy Dietz and her helpers. As usual Pat Robert did a great job in the kitchen. Thanks to her and her helpers. She needs someone to do the grocery shopping. Holly Johnson designed the flyer again. A new over-all-chairman is desirable for 2008.
The income is used to pay our Pledge to the Metro East District UMW, and then is sent on to the MN Conference UMW, where some is kept for programming and leadership training, but most is sent on to the Women’s Division of the UMC. The Response magazine, the official magazine of UMW has stories of how the funds are used. Pick one up in the narthex and return it.
Apple butter is still available. Canning jars for the apple butter and the pickles may be returned to the church kitchen. Please check the cart in the kitchen for dishes that might belong to you. Janet Ewing, Holiday Bazaar Chairperson
The book of Discipline says,” In every local church there shall be an organized unit of United Methodist Women.” As President of RUMW, I confess, the official organized unit, is not. We have not had even the minimum officers since about 1994. Because I know how important our local financial support is to women, children and youth around the world and I have been and will continue to be involved on the District and Conference levels I volunteered to be President. Since the Piecemakers were and are a consistent women’s group they function as the executive team for RUMW. Hanne Wonderchek serves as Treasurer, with Emily Medin as backup. The RUMW receive their funds from the Holiday Bazaar, the Spring Salad Luncheon, sale of tied quilts, hand quilting for people, and funds received for serving luncheons for funerals and memorial services. We could not continue without the support from all of you. The UMW finances are separate and above and beyond members contributions to the local church finances. Our current and historical focus is ministries addressing the needs of women, children and youth; ….leadership development,….(20 Questions About Women Organized for Mission and The Joys of Membership, both are available in the narthex.)
Many thanks for the donations of fabric, yarn and used jeans to the Piecemakers, quilters. Keep the donations coming. Donations that are unsuitable for our use we pass on to others. The jean quilts are sold as soon as they are completed so keep donating your used jeans. The Piecemakers hand quilted 4 quilts during the year. Those who tie quilts made 62-baby size, 19 twin, 3 full, 15 queen, and 8 king for a total of 107quilts. The number of squares cut, or hems removed from sheets used for the tied quilt backs are too numerous to count. Some ladies lay out the squares and others sew them together. We are a support group for each other and celebrate birthdays once a month. We have show and tell, try to have some devotions and share some humor each week. For information about the Piecemakers contact Wilma Wooden or Lavonne Swenson. We would be glad to welcome you to our group.
Quilts were donated to the following causes: Urban Plunge-2, Care Center-3, Rosemount Resource Center-5, La Puerta Abierta-4, Baby Jesus Shower-4, Military Families-3, Family Focus(works with 137 foster children)-2, Paint-a-thon-1, Silent Auction-1, Minister Joseph Howard-1, Cancer-1 for a total of 27. We also sent a carton of quilt batts to Jamaica with the work team that left January 15, 2008.
Funeral and Memorial Service Receptions are under the leadership of Carol Olson. Please call Carol or leave a message at the church office if you are willing to serve God through this ministry. The time varies but is commonly after 9:00am and completed by 3:30 at the latest. Thank you to those who provide food, serve, and clean up, including the men who operate the dishwasher for these occasions. The families greatly appreciate this time to visit over food.
The Spring SALAD LUNCHEON will be Wednesday April 23, 2008. Mary Moffit will be anticipating your assistance. Mark it is on your calendar.
