In the beginning…….God!
In the beginning, before there was anything, before people, before animals, before the mountains and the seas, before the sun, moon and planets, before all of this………
there was God.
Join us for worship this summer as we start at the beginning, the Genesis, to rediscover the God who was, and is, and is to come. We’ll be working our way through the Old Testament book of Genesis. Each week we’ll look at our own Genesis, our own beginning, as we see ourselves in the story of God and God’s covenant with people. You are encouraged to read the passage before you come to worship each week.

Pastor’s Book Review- Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller
This collection of essays/chapters over the thoughts and reflections of a man from a postmodern perspective on the church and Christianity is relevant and helpful in a time and age when people seem to be thirsting for something out of the ordinary. The subtitle of this book is Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality. It is interesting to me how different people specify what is religious and nonreligious. In some respects, I agree that Donald Miller has some ‘nonreligious’ thoughts that he writes about. But at the same time, he speaks of God and Jesus and church quite a bit, and generally I think of that as indicative of ‘religious’ thoughts. But then again, he is not always predictable or typical in his words or stories, so perhaps the subtitle is correct. How about you? What do you think of in terms of nonreligious or religious? Is it important for us to distinguish? I’m not sure it really is. I’m curious as to what you think.
A main theme that I appreciated throughout the book was Miller’s resistance to assumptions, particularly assumptions found in Christianity. Though I caught him reverting to the use of them a few times himself, overall Miller was able to point out the many places where these notions can limit understanding and acceptance of people. In one example, he wrote about an interview where he was asked to defend Christianity. His reply to the interviewer was that he couldn’t possibly begin to defend Christianity. The reason for this? Christianity means something different to every single person. Ask ten people what it means, and you’ll get ten different answers. How could he defend something that means something different for every one else?
Something that stuck out for me personally, due to my own career, was when he wrote about “Mark the Cussing Pastor.” People would talk about Mark, a pastor, and put him down because he cussed. They assumed that people of good faith, people who were pastors, shouldn’t cuss. Regardless of the particular issue of cussing, it is true that we assume behaviors and beliefs and customs of different people based on one piece of information we have about them. I often cringe when people meet me for the first time and assume I will or will not do or believe something, simply because I am a pastor. Even if they are right, I strongly object to any assumptions placed on me! Maybe it’s because of my need to self-differentiate and be unique and different, but whatever it is, I want to have the room to define who I am myself, not because of any labels or assumptions placed upon me. Can you relate to this? Why are there so many assumptions and labels that exist within the church?
There’s a lot more that I’d like to comment on, but this is the struggle of a short book review. You’ll have to read it for yourself to discover more. I invite you to share your responses, thoughts, questions, reactions with me. bheerwald@rosemountumc.org
The next two books I’ll be reviewing:
Be the Surprise, by Terry Esau, about allowing God to surprise others through our faith.
What is the What, by Dave Eggers, about the Sudanese Lost Boys.

Special Youth Ministry Concert
Word Records artists
Since 2001, Daniel (drums), David (guitar, piano, vocals), Philip (bass, vocals), and Paul Zach (electric and acoustic guitar, vocals) have toured and built a devoted grass-roots following while playing over 150 shows each year. With an eclectic mix of influences and an incendiary live show that draws comparisons to Mute Math and Switchfoot,
Most importantly, the four young brothers all share the mindset that it's more than just about their music: "We have found music to be a powerful tool for evangelism and for generating excitement about eternity and eternal things," says David. "We have seen lives changed and commitments made for Christ at concerts and worship times. Every night we play music we share from God’s word and every song we sing is inspired by His word because we know it is the only thing powerful enough to change lives. We’ve found the purpose of the universe and we live to proclaim absolute Truth at high volumes."
