One great day! One great event! One great way to help others!
One great swipe at those nasty mosquitoes!

Come on out to Rosemount UMC on Saturday, May 31, 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. for a fantastic day of fun and helping children in Africa. Nothing But Nets is a mission project supported by the UMC, NBA, and Bill Gates Foundation to get insecticide treated bed nets to children in malaria stricken areas of Africa. One bed net lasts FOUR years and only costs $10!!! Our Net-a-Thon has the potential to help villages of children.

We have implemented a slightly different format than first publicized! This is so exciting! Play as a family or combine with another family or get a bunch of friends or relatives. It doesn’t matter what age or talent your team is. JUST GET A TEAM of 6 or more people!!! Your team pays $30 (about $5 per person or ½ a net!!) and viola! You have helped 3 children. Now, the fun part! Your team gets to play soccer, basketball and street hockey; all games that use nets. The games will be short, and little or no talent is necessary. We’re just here to help African kids stay healthy. Be sure to register your team at the Nothing But Nets Net-a-Thon display in the narthex. This will help us to organize the games so don’t delay, sign up today! (We would like teams to sign up by May 11, Mother’s Day (now wouldn’t that be a nice gift for Mom?) but no team will be turned away). Once your team fee is paid, write your team name on one of the big yellow mosquitoes and pin it to the bed net. You have now helped THREE children in Africa. Congratulations!!! Way to go!!! Wasn’t that fun!!! Easy, too!!! Just as an FYI, be sure to arrive no later than noon; that is the latest that teams can check in on May 31.

While you’re here, there will be other fun things to do:

If you have any questions, please contact one of the design team members: Steve Anderson, Jennifer Heim, Andrea Klekner, Karen Klekner, Carla Student, Steve Thompson.

Support the work of Jesus Christ around the world.

Dear Friends,

Rosemount UMC will be taking a special offering on Wednesday April 30th & Sunday May 4th. The special offering will go toward two projects:

1. Annual Conference Love Offering – each year the Annual Conference designates specific projects for this offering which is given at the Annual Conference session at the end of May. This year’s Love Offering will support:

2. Russian Church InitiativeUnited Methodism is growing steadily in Russia. Many people, including many young adults, are making professions of faith. In 2004, Minnesota United Methodists voted to fund a multipurpose facility that could serve as a congregational meeting place, a training center for lay people, and conference offices for the Northwest Conference Russia of the Eurasia Episcopal Area. The Russian Church Initiative helps us to fulfill that promise.

For more information on either of these special offerings please go to the website of the Minnesota Annual Conference at www.mnumc.org click on the link for “Miracle Month” to learn more about the Russian Church Initiative or the Love Offering line found in the “more news” section.

These are great mission opportunities. Please give generously. Together, as United Methodists, we can accomplish what no one church can do on its own.

In Christ,
Pastor Karen Bruins

Pastor’s Book Review- Grace (Eventually): Thoughts on Faith by Anne Lamott

This is the second book of Anne Lamott’s that I’ve read, and I treasure her every word. To be honest, I already liked her before I started reading this book, so I started off biased from the prelude, and remained so through the acknowledgement page. What I most appreciate about Anne is her candor and her extreme honesty—and I mean extreme honesty. In a world that often makes me feel like everyone is censoring their words and actions, Anne presents her faith with freshness, raw vulnerability, and humor.
Grace (Eventually): Thoughts on Faith is a collection of short essays on a variety of topics, from raising her son and losing her dog in a forest to abortion and assisted suicide. Anne has an unusual life story, and yet in one essay she says she too knows the “sorrow in being ordinary.” A former alcoholic and drug user, she carries with her all of her life’s experiences. She is not afraid to speak or write her mind. At the same time, she is honest about offending people and finding grace in the moments when she is not at her best.

What I most appreciate about her writing is that in the midst of her narration of typical or mundane or annoying things in life that she must deal with, Anne will produce a nugget of such truth that it sticks out and hits you like a five-foot tall door frame. She knows from her Sunday school class that children love any story about a dead person in the Bible. She discovers that the person who most often ends up offering her help is the person who at first looked like they would cause her more trouble. She points out the “ingredients” of her spiritual life as love, poetry, prayer, mediation, and community. She learns that sometimes the nearness of her son is enough to keep her from sinking. She prays simple prayers of “hello” and “thank you” and “help me” to God, who is everywhere around her, just waiting for her to notice him/her. (She actually alternates her use of pronouns for God—confusing at first, but quickly becomes just one part of how she relates to God.) She appreciates the joy she feels when the door to the choir room is opened, even just a speck, so that she can hear the power of the voices as she walks on down the hallway.

The thoughts I’ll take away from this book I’ll ask of you. Where do you find God in the ordinary, in the mundane? What short prayers do you offer to God? What are the ingredients of your spiritual life? I haven’t listed all of mine just yet, but for today they are: laughing, sharing, writing, reading, great conversations with the ones I love, asking questions, and looking for God. I invite you to share your responses, thoughts, questions, reactions with me. bheerwald@rosemountumc.org

"Living the Sacred" is the theme for the 2008 MN School of Christian Mission which is sponsored by United Methodist Women around the country. Wilma Roberts, a missionary since 1956, will teach the main study Giving Our Hearts Away: Native American Survival. The study will search for appropriate ways for UM to be engaged in mission with Native Americans. How do we cooperate with tribal structures and be sensitive to cultural issues?

Attendees have the choice of one of two other studies. Israel-Palestine will cover the history and complexities of their relationships and explore the use/abuse of religion in mid-Eastern and United States policies. The study leaders have both been on fact finding tours in the region in the last two years. John Darlington is the lead pastor at Christ UMC in Rochester and he has served on the MN Conference Palestine Israel Justice Project from 2000-2008. Debra Ricci's interest grew out of her 25 year career teaching relational communication at public and private universities in the Twin Cities area. Her husband retired UMC pastor Dwight Haberman founded the Palestine/Israel Justice Project in 2000.

The Spiritual Growth Study I Believe in Jesus is a spiritual growth study addressing the gift of faith in Jesus Christ and the meaning of that faith in a post-modern world. The study leaders are Ginger Eddy, who has been active in UMW and Schools of Christian Mission since the '70s; Suzanne Mades who is currently the pastor of Portland Avenue UMC. She believes "it is the church's mandate to proclaim the unconditional, all-inclusive love of God to a world that denies this love to so many, and to practice this love in the context of community so that our lives may be transformed and healed."; Carol Rieke is currently a Women's Division Director and was just elected to serve four more years in that position. "The greatest love of my life is Our Lord and Savior, because without him I would have never come this far."

Many men as well as the usual women are return attendees. The MN School of Christian Mission is celebrating its 60th year. More information and registration may be found on the UMW bulletin board. This will be held at St. John's University in Collegeville. You have three opportunities to attend. The weekday school begins Tuesday, July 15 at 9:30a.m. and concludes with lunch on Friday, July 18. The weekend event begins with registration at 3p.m. Friday, July 18 and concludes with lunch on Sunday, July 20. Free child care will be offered for children 5 years old and younger and registration must be in June 30. Drive-In Day is Thursday, July 17. You may borrow the study books to read them prior to attending, although that is not a prerequisite, from Janet Ewing.
