Baptism

Baptism is a sacrament ordained by Christ. It can be received only once, but its effects are lasting. The United Methodist church recognizes the baptism of persons in other Christian communities and does not re-baptize. A baptism may be arranged through consultation with one of the pastors. Private baptisms are discouraged because the sacrament is an act of the community of faith. The water of baptism is especially symbolic, signifying:

BIRTH and LIFE: Paul likened the water of baptism to the waters of the womb. As we are born from the womb, so in baptism are we born in Christian life.

DEATH: The waters of baptism also link us with Christ's death and resurrection. Immersion in water is a form of burial that destroys sins and gives us new life in Christ.

CLEANSING: As in the Old Testament, the water of baptism symbolized the cleansing of sin and the purification of our souls.

GROWTH: Water traditionally symbolizes nourishment and growth.

Baptism is one of two sacraments celebrated in the United Methodist church. Baptism incorporates new members into the church to promote their spiritual growth; identifies the recipient as a baptized Christian; signifies death, rebirth and new life through the Spirit of Christ; and assures that our sins are forgiven. Baptism may be celebrated for new members of any age.
