Simpson Shelter

RUMC prepares and serves meals one Monday per month for the Simpson Shelter in Minneapolis. Contact Rich Wirt if you are interested in helping.

Responsibilities:

• Purchase and prepare the food for 70 guests.
• Serve the meal at 7:30 p.m.
• Save food for guests arriving late.
• Perform cleanup of serving supplies, eating area and kitchen.
• Fill out meal record form for statistical purposes.
• Bring 3 gallons of milk for breakfast.
  

Qualifications:

• Ability to communicate with people of diverse background.
• Responsible, reliable, patient and respectful.
• Time Commitment: 3 hours per shift plus additional time for planning, purchasing and preparing the meal.
  

Volunteers may arrive at 6:00 p.m. to start their meal preparation. Please call to schedule with staff if more time is necessary.

Facilities:
Full kitchen on-site includes a commercial oven, refrigerator, pots, pans, utensils, glasses and dinnerware. Meal can be made in advance and warmed at the shelter or prepared completely at the shelter.

We are on the northwest corner of 28th Street and First Avenue South just east of Nicollet Avenue in Simpson United Methodist Church. Our main entrance is on the 28th Street side. For volunteering in the evening, you can go to the rear door or the Church Office door on First Avenue and ring the bell. Staff will come to let you in.


From 35W South
Take the Lake Street/31st Street exit to Lake Street. Go west (left) on Lake Street two blocks to First Avenue South. Go north (right) on First Avenue South past K-Mart and across the bridge. Go west (left) where the road divides one block to Nicollet Avenue. Follow Nicollet Avenue north (right) for one block to 28th Street. Go east (right) on 28th Street. The alley to our parking lot is one half block down on the north (left) side of the street. Follow it around back of the church to the parking lot. There is also street parking in front of the church on 28th Street and on the other side of First Avenue South. Both 28th Street and First Avenue South are snow emergency routes, so we recommend parking in the lot during the winter.

From 35W North
Take the 35th Street/36th Street exit to 35th Street. Go west (right) on 35th Street one block to First Avenue South. Go north (right) on First Avenue South for several blocks past K-Mart and across the bridge. Go west (left) where the road divides one block to Nicollet Avenue. Follow Nicollet Avenue north (right) for one block to 28th Street. Go east (right) on 28th Street. The alley to our parking lot is one half block down on the north (left) side of the street. From 94 West
Take the Lyndale Avenue exit to Lyndale Avenue South. Follow Lyndale Avenue South to 28th Street. Go east (left) several blocks on 28th Street. The alley to our parking lot is just after Nicollet Avenue between Frenz Brake and Simpson United Methodist Church on the north (left) side of the street. Follow it around back of the church to the parking lot. There is also street parking in front of the church on 28th Street and on the other side of First Avenue South. Both 28th Street and First Avenue South are snow emergency routes, so we recommend parking in the lot during the winter.

From 94 East
Follow 94 to 35W South. Take the first exit, 35th Street/36th Street, to 35th Street. Go west (right) on 35th Street one block to First Avenue South. Go north (right) on First Avenue South for several blocks past K-Mart and across the bridge. Go west (left) where the road divides one block to Nicollet Avenue.
